What’s not to like?
I can’t fall asleep without watching an episode (or two or three) of Friends before bed every night. These desserts are a result of the millions of Friends references I have stuck in my head at any given time.
The cake is inspired by Rachel’s infamous Thanksgiving trifle, which includes:
-a layer of ladyfingers (vanilla cake)
-a layer of jam (strawberry jam swiss meringue buttercream)
-custard (vanilla cake)
-raspberries (strawberry jam swiss meringue buttercream and raspberries)
-more ladyfingers (vanilla cake)
-beef sautéed with peas and onions (chocolate cake and fondant peas)
-a little more custard (vanilla cake)
-bananas and then I just put some whipped cream on top!
The “Joey Special” aka 2 pizzas are made out of vanilla macarons, an edible food pen, coconut, and fondant toppings. I made a whole batch of macarons, but only two became pizzas because “JOEY DOESN’T SHARE FOOD!!!”
Ross’ sandwich is arguably the most famous food reference in all of Friends. The sandwich is made out of fondant pieces layered between two macarons. Also included, a useless fondant post-it to protect his sandwich from being stolen.
The unagi macarons aren’t technically a food reference, but I can’t resist making sushi out of dessert. My parents would also like to point out that unagi is freshwater eel, not tuna or salmon like the rolls below, (or a Japanese concept of always being aware), but I didn’t think freshwater eel would look very appealing/pretty made out of fondant. I’m sure Rachel and Phoebe would be okay eating these macarons anyway.
I hope these desserts give you some inspiration in case you ever need to throw a last minute bon voyage surprise party, or throw a halloween party as an excuse to wear your space doody costume. I promise the cake tastes just as good as it looks, unlike Rachel’s trifle. Give some of these desserts a try at your next party, just don’t forget the cups and ice!
